Qi Cultivation
The
Taoist practice can be split into 2 phases, namely Qigong phase,
Meditative(stillness) phase. When cultivating Qi, it is very important
to connect to the Heaven and Earth. Heaven and Earth refers to the
training environment. If one practices on the rooftop, one isn’t able to
connect with the Qi of the Earth. If one practices indoors, then one
also misses out on the Qi from the sky(Heaven), leaving only one’s own
store of Qi. If the practitioner isn’t healthy to begin with, and don’t
have the habit of exercising, the effect of training indoors is usually
poor.
Thus when training Qi, one must
practice outdoors. The most ideal environment would be one that has all 5
elements. The sun in the sky(fire), trees in the vicinity(wood), grass
to step on(earth). Sometimes there might be rocks nearby such as
granite(metal), a small stream or waterfall nearby(water) but these 2
elements are harder to come by. We work with what is available without
getting overly fixated on the fine details. It is best to train
barefooted as it allows better connection to the Earth. Qi training
should start from movement as opposed to a seated practice, which might
reduce the circulation of Qi in the body, making in harder to clear the
meridians.
